How to style your family for family pictures that will look perfect for holiday cards.

Picking out family picture outfits can be overwhelming- especially if you have a husband whose wardrobe is classified as “athleisure”. I follow a few general guidelines below to help me decide and I try to enjoy the years where my kids will let me pick out their clothes. (And if I’m being honest- my husband wears almost the same outfit every year!) Edited to add: Here’s a link to our family pictures wearing these looks.
- Pick a color palette but don’t try to “match”
- Stick to mostly solids- but a print or two is o.k.
- I love wearing black in everyday life, but try to stay away from it for family pictures (I feel like it doesn’t pop as much!)
- Wear something you are comfortable in (don’t force yourself into something you don’t feel confident in)
- Think about your backdrop- is it greenery? Fall trees? A blank studio wall? Plan accordingly.
- This one is a big one for me. Think about how you will use the pictures? A holiday card? Hanging in your home? I usually make sure what my family is wearing in pictures fits in with the things I gravitate toward when I select holiday cards or home decor.
